3 SKINCARE INGREDIENTS DERMATOLOGISTS SAY YOU SHOULD NEVER USE IF YOU STRUGGLE WITH DARK SPOTS

Three skincare ingredients that you believe people should never use if they struggle with dark spots.

Retinol

While retinol is good for reducing dark spots, be careful, especially during your first days of use. It can be excessively strong for your skin leading to irritation or drying. If your skin is sensitive, begin with less concentrations or add regular moisture to reduce its strength.

Fragrance and perfume

Skincare products with fragrance and perfume irritate the skin by triggering melanocytes to produce more melanin. It happens, especially following exposure to UV rays that increase the inflammatory response by altering the working of melanocytes. Consequently, the skin develops vulnerability to pigmentation.

Benzyl peroxide

Frequent use of Benzyl peroxide can cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which come as dark spots. It also has a bleaching effect that can result in redness, burning, and itching, more so for people with medium and darker skins.

What is ONE ingredient that you feel works best on hyperpigmentation?

I recommend vitamin C, which supplies antioxidants that attack free radicals- molecules notorious for damaging body cells. They can damage skin cells and cause hyperpigmentation. But thanks to vitamin C, which protects skin cells. It also limits melanin release, thus reducing more dark spots appearance and lightens the skin tone to reduce the current discoloration.
