Business Name and what it does

Akoustyx is a new name in the audiophile & in-ear monitor community as the company was just set up in 2017.

Founder’s/Owner’s story and what motivated them to start the business

Ravi Sharma, the founder & CMO of Akoustyx has been in the audio industry in multiple roles since 1988 with practical hands-on working experience on retail level working with consumers, distributors, importers, exporters, sourcing offices & even working on the production lines as well. Working on OEM brands & helping tier-1 to Tier-5 level brands with their product development.

Known in the industry as ‘Rocky’ the founder has experienced & worked his way through the evolution of the audio industry from vinyl to today’s digital format.

Ravi’s passion for audio has never stopped him from working on new projects. Finding innovative ideas & ways to make unique products. An example is the industry’s first wireless flat-panel Distribution Mode Loudspeaker (DML). Once, while working late, he even made an empty pizza box into a full working audio speaker, just to know if it was possible. He still regrets he did not patent the idea.

Ravi started the In-Ear Monitor business back in 2009 called Rock-It Sounds but that business venture did not work out with overbearing partners who, in Ravi’s opinion, wanted to ‘sell junk’.

In 2016, when nearly all brands were making their products in China, Ravi envisioned the same products can be made here in the US with a more focus on quality & building back the American audio industry & still be price competitive.

At a time when custom molded in-ear monitors cost a small fortune, which they still do, Ravi envisioned a more pragmatic approach to use detachable fitting pieces to ‘swap-around’ to get a customized fit, without the high cost of custom-molded monitors, offer good audio quality which musicians, studio technicians & audiophiles expect & offer such a product at a reasonable price plus make them here in the US.

The cost of making such products here in the US will surely be higher than China & Co. but having the Ravi believes we can still be competitive.

In 2017, Akoustyx LLC was set up & we launched our products at the 2018 Rocky Mountain Audio Fest in Denver & then have exhibited at the NAMM shows & the CanJam shows.

Gradually, more users are becoming aware of our micro brand & hopefully we can start the recovery process now.

The challenges the business/market is facing

With any new brand to the market, there will always be multiple challenges. One main challenge comes in the form of copy-cat products from a certain communist country selling products under cost to drive other brands in the industry out of business.

We have had an especially tough time due to the pandemic which literally brought 202, 2021 & most of 2022 to a glacial pace. Fortunately, the world is starting to recover & life is getting back to a more normal level.

Akoustyx launched two new products this August & so far, the response has been encouraging.

The opportunities the business/market is facing

Opportunities really depend on expectations. Every opportunity has a bright side & a dark side. Although the world is coming out of the pandemic, we may be looking at a more cautious spending behavior by consumers based on the current economic situations. This is especially applicable to products which have a more focused customer base.

If your product is of decent quality, reasonable value & you can provide good customer service, there will always be people who value these qualities above mass marketing or artificially lowered pricing.

Ravi has a fake Rolex watch that does not work well on his desk, which he purchased when he was in China. A reminder that quality products have a reason for the asking price & a value which customers appreciate.

‘Make a product that you will buy with your own money & actually use it’ is what is behind the Akoustyx product design.
