ALCOHOL ABUSE

What are your thoughts about the research and findings?

 I support the study as alcohol abuse at a later age in life, or in your 40s, can be a presenting symptom of dementia. Late-onset alcohol abuse can be an underlying or early warning symptom of frontotemporal dementia as a good number diagnosed with this condition reported this among the first signs.

Why is drinking a possible sign of a neurological issue/dementia?

Extreme alcohol drinking or alcohol abuse can be a sign of dementia. It impacts how the brain functions by altering the brain structure, which increases the risk of neurological conditions and triggers other dementia symptoms such as memory problems, confusion, poor decision making, and low cognitive functioning.

How can a person tell if someone is abusing alcohol?

I recommend you check out these early warning signs to know if someone is abusing alcohol;

  • You notice they have frequent short-term memory problems or blackouts.
  • Some may portray sudden mood swings, agitation, and irritation.
  • Frequent drinking with endless reasons on why they drink.
  • Hiding from others to drink.
  • Prioritizing drinking rather than your daily tasks.
