Amazon trips into the Manu National Park

Founder’s/Owner’s story and what motivated them to start the business.

Greenlandperu.com is a Eco tours company into the amazon of Peru, created on the 2007, my name is Fredy Dominguez: the founder and owner, I am an inhabitant of the Manu Biosphere reserve, my father is a jungle person, who tough me everything about living in the jungle, collecting, hunting, fishing, building, navigating and over all the respect and gratitude for nature and jungle people, but only because of my mother,  I could go to the university to start my own business, without her I would stay like “Mowgli”. I learned in the amazon and learned in the university, but my knowledge is limited, nonetheless I feel like part of nature in the Amazon.

As a jungle person the first thing I learned it was to use a machete, but later y worked with my father as assistant or boat driver carrying tourists into Manu, I liked since the first time the tourists, and their languages (English), that is how I got the idea to became a jungle guide and go to the university. During the 5 years in the university, I realize that Tourism can help to local people, besides my coworkers and clients, I know we have to be responsible with local people and environment, treating the garbage and paying fairly to the workers, some of them are my friends from childhood.

I got my degree in Tourism with a thesis about Matshiguenka and Wachiperi amazon ethnic communities.

Now I have 21 years working in Tourism, and live in Cusco to get clients, but my entire life is connected to the jungle, which gives me experience and confidence to continue with my business.

What we do

I organize and lead jungle trips into the Amazon from 3 to 8 days or more.

What makes unique my trips I think is all the background as inhabitant of the amazon, combine with my knowledge as an educated person at the university, ( I can presume,  I can drive a car and drive a boat, my only weakness is cooking, hopefully I will never need these skills, but if so, we will be able to continue our jungle trips) I can tell it is a familiar business as well, because most of the time my mother is the cook, she has been cooking for different companies for more than 30 years; as I aspire to grow as company I also have some good jungle guides, always keeping the bases when arranging the trips, to give my clients memorable experiences.

I think being responsible will give me the chance to continue living from this profession.

The challenges the business/market is facing

  • The bad competition, people think tourism is not a profession, so many people just start illegal business without any responsibility, doing the cheapest way and avoiding rules, exploiting workers and not caring of nature,  clients do not know about it, sellers can tell pretty lies, then is a problem for everyone. Probably like other business, nice websites make the difference with clients, but nobody knows what is behind.
  • Global economic situation
  • The people who moved to the jungle who have increased deforestation because not many options for working and living.

The opportunities the business/market is facing

  • This area is still a unique place, ecological levels, biodiversity and authentic amazon cultures, in this times, to find authentic experiences are some difficult, I think my history, experience and education have given to me the tools to create these experiences.
  • My trips starts in Cusco, from here you can arrange any trip to the most famous places of Peru.
  • If you would like to get in contact with nature, is better you are disconnected of big cities, maybe less crowded, maybe nobody else. Our groups are not bigger than 10 people, and many times small groups as only 2 persons.

Advice to others about business

In my case, starting from nothing, far from everywhere deep in the jungle, makes you realized that things take longer to concrete.

Still, some people cannot believe how I could go to the university, finish it, and live from it, as I remember it was easy and funny, I enjoyed all my life, everything was a challenge and getting over them, made me more confident, but; I am good only in the jungle, even when my license gives me the chance to organize and be a guide basically through all Peru, out of the jungle I am not that good… just another guide.

Times are changing fast, maybe like change of climate, people can start anything, but I think, for money, we can do only what we really know, that is being professional.

The work of a family doctor includes a wide range of clinical diversity, which requires extensive knowledge and erudition from a specialist. However, I believe that the most important thing for a family doctor is to be human because the cooperation and understanding between the doctor and the patient are crucial in ensuring successful health care. On my days off, I love being in nature. Since childhood, I have been passionate about playing chess and tennis. Whenever I have time off, I enjoy traveling around the world.
