Rubens may be known as a Flemish Baroque painter from the 1600s, but he was also definitely a BBW guy. Take one look at his collection of fine art and you’ll notice straight away that he likes his lasses on the heavy side: Venus, Eve (in The Fall of Man)and The Three Graces are all big, beautiful women who are considered to be priceless masterpieces.

The term ‘BBW’ has been used since the 1970s to refer to big, beautiful women. The term is loosely applied to anyone in the spectrum that ranges from slightly overweight to morbidly obese. Today, the idea of what makes a body beautiful has swung back to the pleasantly plump, and BBWs are ready to take the stage with the mantra: ‘be yourself, and be prepared to stand up for what you believe in’.

BBWs are making a strong comeback in popular culture, too. Adele has wowed audiences with her voluptuous curves and sensational singing voice, Christina Schmidt is taking the modelling world by storm with pictures that could make you weak at the knees, and Emme has made it into the hall of fame grossing the highest salary in the plus-size modelling profession. It’s all about a state of mind: big is beautiful, and you are perfect just the way you are.

April Flores, BBW model and adult actress entered mainstream media a few years ago when she agreed to share the bedroom stage with Belladonna and fans loved it: the adult production ratings shot through the roof and other production companies jumped on the bandwagon to release major-selling BBW titles that grossed far more than they expected.

Flores says, “I want women to know the power of confidence. Confidence is a very big turn on for most people and will goes a long way in many aspects of life. Also, I want women to not be afraid to explore their sexuality because of their weight. I want to show bigger girls that they can be sexy and express themselves sexually regardless of their size. More to love, right?”
