How It Started, & We Aren’t Finished

Fromgirltogirl.com is a lifestyle health and wellness website all about helping women empower their communities by empowering themselves. Well, that was the original objective of the website. But it transformed to so much more: A trusted news source for audiences of all ages and genders, exploring social justice issues, nutrition, entrepreneurship, and community member financial literacy.

Founder’s Story – Briana Booker

Briana Booker, Founder of fromgirltogirl.com, created the website as a teen blog or journal to talk about life and popular topics of interest. It was a space she designed for self-empowerment and support for other girls and women who felt out of place in society. She wanted to combat the toxicity of mean girl culture as someone who felt she was consistently bullied and lacked a support system on topics most prefer not to discuss out loud. But that is not abnormal for teens and it did not stop her from believing it was possible to create a platform of social support.

To accomplish a virtual support system, Booker connected with fellow bloggers who were inspired to have a voice through the internet. Sadly, not all days are great days or even good days. Some girl power bloggers passed away, including from suicide. Rest in power Karyn Washington, you still inspire young women to this day, our Forever For Brown Girls Blogger.

You never know what people are going through or what support is lacked in our communities, no matter how inspiring and successful life looks like from the outside, just be kind.

Guess you have to look at now and then to identify if social media, work, or school bullying got better or worse. Fortunately there are resources available and now community bases on the worldwide web and non-virtual world to combat challenges we all can face.

How It Started

Fromgirltogirl was created when social media websites were something new on a limited internet ecosystem. Here is what we mean by the early years of the internet:

  • Text message send outs were pay by the cent. Flip phones started production and Booker did not even have a flip phone yet. Yes, it was still normal to call from a phone booth.
  • Websites had cost by time to view from mobile phones. Browsing the web on-the-go was extremely expensive.
  • Google search engine was in early development. America on Online ( AOL) was King and Internet Explorer was used mostly by government and schools.
  • Facebook did not exist. Myspace was popular.

Where was fromgirltogirl.com hosted those days? Google’s Blogspot. It was convenient.

During a federal government internship at the U.S. Department of Education, which was obtain through Booker’s interest in economic policy, research and development, her supervisor/ mentor – John White, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Rural Outreach,  noticed he couldn’t read articles from work because the government firewall only permitted certain websites to circulate its space, and Google’s Blogspot was not one. The internship opportunity granted Booker the opportunity to coordinate with the Deputy Assistant Secretary, John White, on the Appalachian Policy Initiative to change economic environment in the 13 state Appalachian Regions in support of the Obama Administration’s Educational Blueprint Reform.

When new readership cannot reach a website, that is a lost opportunity for growth.

Booker knew she had to have the fromgirltogirl.com website accessible for both private and public sector readers to reach a nationwide and international readership base goal. It was not that hard building this readership base because the topics were of interest to those who felt Fromgirltogirl was relatable. The hard part was finding ways to monetize the website because there is always operational costs when you want to get noticed.

Booker went from a teen birthday gift money to a broke college student in a matter of years. So, she had to get resourceful to operate Fromgirltogirl.

Some bloggers , like Shan Boodram, who teamed up with a group of young ladies at ‘ThoseGirls Are Wild,’ grew fast because you can grow further with a good team. But they always showed support to young women empowerment websites like Fromgirltogirl.com.  However, fromgirltogirl.com was one-person operation with some guest features, including friends and family.  Let’s just say it is hard to do. It is not that people don’t want the help when they get something started, but people jump on the bandwagon when they feel it going somewhere everyone wants to go. That is when public relations and event planning became an interest to Fromgirltogirl.com. Booker learned from Shan Boodram and the ‘Those Girls Are Wild,’ team and they were kind enough to give fromgirltogirl.com a backlink back in the day.

Instead of focusing on gossip trends and sensational news that made people rich in the 2000’s,  Booker went a longer route. She focused on scholar research, data, politics and Corporate America. She even built up her national and international readership, database of contacts, and lifestyle reviews. Then  college graduation came.

Let’s flash forward to 2022 and onward.

Business Advice to Others

> Ownership is key to success. Just like real estate, you can buy and sell internet estate. Even if your website fails, you can sell your website name for more than you bought it. Don’t be afraid of entrance and exit.

> Skill build for a lifetime. You never know when a great idea can become a product or service.  Booker got into strategy, politics, and even cybersecurity from being a blogger. This is America.

I am deeply convinced that each patient needs a unique, individual approach. Therefore, I use different psychotherapy methods in my work. During my studies, I discovered an in-depth interest in people as a whole and the belief in the inseparability of mind and body, and the importance of emotional health in physical health. In my spare time, I enjoy reading (a big fan of thrillers) and going on hikes.
