A good night’s sleep is essential to the overall health and well-being of human beings. It is highly recommended that an individual gets quality sleep each night. This is estimated at 7 – 10 hours each day.

Getting quality sleep ensures that one feels well-rested and energised enough for the day. A sufficient night’s sleep is responsible for memory formation. It also helps in helping the muscles to grow and also repair the tissues, as well as preventing sickness. Some people may find it difficult to fall asleep. Some do but cannot maintain it for longer periods. The solution to sleep disorders may vary, and possible approaches may include prescribing sleeping pills or getting sleep aids. Increasingly, people have been starting to look towards CBD to enhance sleep period and quality while reducing anxiety.

CBD and sleep disorders

Extensive research on this subject is yet to be conducted. This means that there’s no sufficient data to conclusively announce that CBD is beneficial for sleep disorders. People who have been using CBD for chronic pain have reported that they have also experienced better sleep. Ranges of dosing CBD have different outcomes. Mostly, low doses are stimulants while higher doses of CBD are sedatives. Always administer sedatives to get rid of agitation and irritability. This shows that any differences in outcomes can be attributed to the amount of dosage and the method the drug is administered.

Anxiety and CBD

Anxiety disorders are some of the most common mental conditions amongst the global population. Usually, one can get anxious at any time, and can be triggered by anything. Initial studies in this field – although inconclusive, shows positive outcomes when CBD was used to treat anxiety in place of placebo. Anxiety contributes to poor night’s sleep, insufficient sleep, and sleep disorders. CBD can be used to treat anxiety since it can calm the nervous system. Within months under usage of CBD, significant improvements in sleeping are realized.

Insomnia and CBD

Insomnia attacks are equated to lack of sleep for extended periods of time. It is normal to lack sleep; usually, this disorder results in changes in mood, ability to focus, and poor coordination in some people.

People with a history of insomnia are highly predisposed to suffering from anxiety disorder. As earlier mentioned, there’s evidence that CBD is effective in the treatment of anxiety is some people.

Rapid Eye Movement Disorder and CBD

Sleep-deprived eye movement disorder is a condition most observed in people suffering from insomnia. These patients typically make aggressive rapid eye movements for clear lack of sleep. Rapid eye movement disorder is usually common in people with neurodegenerative conditions especially the elderly. Neurodegenerative diseases may include Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.

A study on mitigating rapid eye movement for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease patients proved positive in its preliminary stages. This is an indication that similar data can be expected for the same condition in people who are sleep deprived. Evidence in a study showed that before taking CBD, the prevalence of the symptoms of the condition in the subjects was 2 to 7 times a week. After CBD, the symptoms toned down drastically to just 0 – 1 time a week. This suggests that CBD is effective in the treatment of rapid eye movement behaviour disorder.

Excessive Daytime Sleepiness Disorder and CBD

Studies on this subject are inconclusive. Some tend to show CBD as a sleep-inducing drug and as sedative. Which means its effects for reducing daytime sleepiness disorder may have been overstated to some extent.

On the other hand, since CBD can treat some conditions that may interfere with sleep such as pain. CBD has been proven to be able to alleviate chronic pain especially that associated with chemotherapy.

How to use CBD for sleep

Treating the root cause of insomnia goes a long way to mitigating the condition. Also, relieving other symptoms that may in the long run lead to insomnia such as chronic pain helps exponentially in tackling the condition of sleep deprivation and its effects. The method of consuming CBD products depends on the form it comes in and the condition that an individual wants eliminate.  The different forms of CBD are; vape concentrates, CBD tinctures and oils, pills and capsules, and edibles like CBD gummies.

Vaping CBD into your system is faster compared to other methods. The effects are experienced within a short time after usage. However, vaping is also associated with other risks, including respiratory concerns.

As aforementioned, CBD dosing informs the effect of CBD and its outcome. However, the amount of product consumed depends on the time taken, weight, personal body chemistry, etc. in this case, the extent of one’s sleeping challenges also influences the product dosage.  What works for some people may not work for others.

In most trials on CBD and sleep, patients are usually given 25 mg to 1500 mg of CBD in a day. It advisable to always start with little doses of CBD and gradually increase it until you find the right dose that works better for you.

In treating anxiety associated with insomnia, CBD may take time to feel the changes; sometimes months. CBD works to tackle underlying causes of insomnia. In many people, lack of adequate sleep may be linked to psychological issues such as anxiety, depression, or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
