Heat Rash

Heat Rash

Heat rash is a common skin condition characterized by a prickly or sting sensation. Also known as prickly heat or miliaria, heat rash affects babies and adults, and it is common in hot, humid weather.

What Causes It

Hot, humid weather causes excessive sweating and oil buildup on the skin. This causes blockage and inflammation of pores, affecting the skin’s ability to expel sweat. It is the sweat trapped under the skin that causes a heat rash.

How We Can Prevent It/Treat It

You can treat or prevent a heat rash by;

  • Staying hydrated
  • Bathing or showering with cold water
  • Applying an ice pack to the affected area of your skin for 20 minutes
  • Avoiding scented shower gels or creams
  • Using light beddings
  • Wearing loose cotton clothing

Who Is Most Susceptible?

People new to hot, humid air and babies covered with too much clothing.
