HOW LONG DOES CBD LAST?

People have different body chemistry resulting in different periods of CBD last in a body. The article first explains how CBD is processed by the body and then elaborates on factors that alter how long CBD last in the system.

CBD, an abbreviation of Cannabidiol, is a chemical compound derived from the leaves or flowers of the cannabis plant, especially the hemp plant. It has grown popular in the past years, particularly as a supplement.CBD has taken the health sector and manufacturers by storm, with people reporting its unlimited health benefits from chronic pain and depression to even skincare. There is a lot of confusion and misunderstood information circulating in the compound. One common misinformed question is how long it takes for the effects of CBD to disappear. CBD can stay in a consumer system from hours to about a month, depending on various factors like how much dosage one takes.

HOW YOUR BODY PROCESSES CBD

understanding how CBD lasts in your system, it is important to understand how it reacts with the body. Taking CBD interacts with your body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) and helps to complement its function. Corroon et al. (2019) stated that ECS is responsible for maintaining internal body balances, such as regulating moods and relieving body pain, stress, and anxiety control. The system contains endocannabinoids distributed to the entire body, enzymes that produce and dissolve endocannabinoids, and neuro-receptors, which bind with endocannabinoids to take action.

CBD binds with the receptors both CB1 and CB2 to help in tackling the problems at hand. It also enhances the production of endocannabinoids and prevents the dissolving of receptors and endocannabinoids by enzymes, thus prolonging the action for efficient results.

CBD has antidepressant and anti-inflammatory properties; when consumed, it increases the serotonin hormone’s production, which helps control mind stress. High concentrations of serotonin lower stress thoughts. CBD reduces mind and body inflammations boosting the immune system in general.

FACTORS AFFECTING HOW LONG CBD LASTS IN THE BODY

The effects of CBD consumption last in the human body for around 2 to 8 hours. This range doesn’t apply to everyone. Some users say that CBD stays in their system for days or even months. Different factors can affect how quickly CBD is absorbed and stays in your body. Include:

  • Methods of consumption
  • Dosage
  • Frequent taking CBD
  • Body chemistry
  • Lifestyle

METHOD OF CONSUMPTION

There are different ways to take CBD, and each method differs with the form of CBD in the market. Sikorski et al. (2021) explained that a CBD product comes with distinct benefits and properties; each has a different duration of effects and how long it stays in the bloodstream. Below are ways of taking CBD products:

CBD OIL

This is the most common method of CBD consumption and is easy to consume. Simply by use of a dropper, place CBD oil under your tongue for a few seconds to allow absorption, then swallow. It enters the bloodstream through soft mouth tissues. It can also bypass the digestive system through the simple sublingually method. In the body, its effects last for 2 to 4 hours.

CBD CAPSULES

This is a favorite method for people who are under daily medications. It is clean and easy to use. Like other tablets of medication form, once swallowed, it takes time to be absorbed into the body. It needs to pass to the digestion process and the liver for metabolism by enzymes, and it can take one to two hours to feel the effects. However, the effects can last for 6-8 hours before leaving the system.

CBD VAPES

Vapes are the fastest way to get CBD oil into your body. You inhale the CBD vapor, bypassing the digestive system, and quickly enter the bloodstream through lung tissues, thus immediate effects. Its effects only last for 30  minutes to an hour.

CBD TOPICALS

They includes lotions, balms, creams, and salves infused with CBD and applied directly to the skin. The CBD compounds are absorbed by skin tissues locally. It takes around 2 hours to feel the effects of CBD skincare and stays effective for 4 to 5 hours maximum.

CBD FOODS AND DRINKS

This involves infusing CBD into your daily meals. The effects of taking CBD with foods and drinks only last for 5 hours maximum.

DOSAGE

Working et al. (2022) stated that the amount of CBD or doses you take would also affect how long it stays in your system. the more doses of CBD you take, the longer it will take for your body to process and maintain the effects. Deabold et al. (2019) suggested that 2 mg of CBD, when consumed, can only be detectable in the blood for about 5 hours, but 10 mg stays for almost a full day.

FREQUENCY OF TAKING CBD

The frequency of CBD use plays an important role in the period CBD stays in the body. However, if you use CBD more often, it builds up over time and stays in your bloodstream largely because CBD compounds are highly soluble in body fat. When consumed frequently, it is absorbed in your fatty tissues and remains in the system for a prolonged period. CBD inhibits the breakdown of the body cannabinoids produced by body ECS; hence if you use CBD less often, it is easily cleared out by the body more quickly by your ECS enzymes.

BODY CHEMISTRY

Everyone’s body is different, and that is why CBD benefits are harnessed by people differently. Your body weight and metabolism highly affect how long CBD stays in your system. CBD is fat soluble; therefore, if you have a higher body mass, CBD effects and benefits will last longer and stay in your system longer since high body weight is associated with a high-fat percentage. Moreover, if you have more body muscles than fat, you are characterized by a high metabolic rate; CBD is easily absorbed into the bloodstream and leaves the body quickly. People with small body weights and high metabolic rates can take a higher dosage of CBD.

LIFESTYLE

Your lifestyle affects how long CBD last. For example, your metabolic rate is high if you have an active lifestyle like athletes, fitness sessions, etc., and CBD effects don’t last long.

Oleinik & Gleb (2020) showed that eating habits could impact how your body processes CBD. After consuming fatty meals, expect CBD concentration levels to be higher in the bloodstream than those who take CBD on an empty stomach. The higher the CBD concentration more time it takes to leave the system.

CONCLUSION

The mass largely uses CBD products, but people don’t know how long they last in their system. It is hard to know exactly how long. CBD lasts in your system because it depends on various factors. These factors include your CBD regime lifestyle, e.g., how much dosage and how often you take, your daily routines, the CBD types, and your method of consumption. Different people react differently to the effects of CBD. Therefore, the period the compound can stay in the body can differ in terms of age, weight, and genetics of a person.

I am deeply convinced that each patient needs a unique, individual approach. Therefore, I use different psychotherapy methods in my work. During my studies, I discovered an in-depth interest in people as a whole and the belief in the inseparability of mind and body, and the importance of emotional health in physical health. In my spare time, I enjoy reading (a big fan of thrillers) and going on hikes.
