Yes you can, and it is safe. It can be a good way to achieve weight loss.

Of course, yes. However, keep listening to your body. If it feels weaker, it is best to stop.

Does the type of fasting affect whether it’s safe to exercise?

It does. For example, healthy individuals doing intermittent fasting can safely exercise. I discourage it for people trying to adopt a new type of fasting, until they properly adjust.

What are the health risks to working out when you’re fasting?

While exercising when fasting increases chances of utilizing fat, do you know the risks? Your body may feel weaker and fail to execute workouts as expected, thus less gains. Again, what if you collapse? You may also breakdown your muscle for fuel, which implies not achieving your intended goal.

Who should/shouldn’t work out when they’re fasting?

People with diabetes should avoid.

or are certain types of exercise better to do when you’re fasting?

Yes. I recommend cardio of light-intensity and strength training starting with upper body workouts, then lower body to limit a drop in blood pressure.

What tips would you give someone about working out while fasting?

Ex. Is there a good time limit for exercise?

For individuals fasting during Ramathan, I tell clients to work out one to two hours before sunset or an hour after your evening meal.

Aim to work out at the beginning of their fast?

Definitely, yes. But it would help if you start slow as you listen to your body. The key is going slow to help the body adjust.
