The Slut Drop

The Slut Drop

I’m all for a bit of booty shakin’, and I’m totally okay with ditching outmoded, sexist ways of thinking, but I’m really not sure what I think of the “slut drop”.

A dance move with its origins in music videos inspired by pole-dancing, the slut drop has achieved widespread notoriety for what I’m assuming is its sheer ridiculousness. A Youtube search yields numerous examples but no one has time for that, so to give you a quick visual, an article in the Guardian describes it like this:

“You fling one hand in the air to steady yourself while you squat, straight-backed. Despite inevitable anterior cruciate ligament injuries, go down as low as is possible, then pop back up immediately.”

The result is, according to the ladies from Geordie Shore, meant to be instant arousal on the part of whatever man you’re looking to snag for a night of fun. To put it in their words “Boom! Slut-drop!”

Anyone who’s ever suffered through sets of squats will know that the slut drop is an excellent workout, but according to the Guardian it’s also “a true signifier of feminine camaraderie”. Sure, that’s some serious booty poppin’ there but I’m not sure I buy it being “one of the few examples of the word [slut] being reclaimed by women”. Now I’m not so prudish as to think we should veer away from anything risqué but let’s be honest, is that move really sexier than it is plain silly? More importantly, in light of a recent fad in college pranking, it seems to be doing anything but inspire respect for women.

Slut-dropping has caught quite some attention recently after articles such as the one by Laura Bates, published in The Independent shed light on a new college freshman prank. Calling it a prank is putting it lightly though, as the process is in fact, remarkably cruel. A play on the term “slut drop”, the “prank” involves a bunch of college lads will cruise around in the early hours looking for a slut, i.e. a girl in saucy attire, visibly in a post-clubbing state and making her way home. Stopping to offer the poor girl a lift, she dutifully climbs into the car with her presumed saviours. No, this is not going quite where you think it is. Neither rape nor chivalry is involved, just really bad humour as the lads immediately speed off, getting as far from the girl’s intended destination as possible. Once they’ve set her back a good few hours of walking distance she’s shoved out the car and the boys drive away, making sure to capture her reaction on video for added hilarity. That’s how they go about “dropping” the slut.

Irrespective of what you think of the dance move, there’s no denying that this kind of fratboy behaviour is just twisted. Whatever the slut drop is doing for female empowerment, with this kind of bad association floating around it’s probably best to distance the name of your booty shaking technique from anything which involves second-degree kidnapping!
