The Steamiest Gay Sex Scenes in Film and Television

The world of entertainment has come a long way since the days when a depiction of a sexual encounter between men or women would not have made it past the censors. As society has become more open to different kinds of sexual orientation, film directors and television producers have been able to create varied scenes of gay sex, from wild hook-ups to tender and affectionate romantic moments. Here are some of the steamiest gay sex scenes of film and TV.

One of the steamiest gay sex scenes in celluloid history was between Daniel Day Lewis’s character Johnny and his Pakistani-born lover, Omar, in Stephen Frears My Beautiful Laundrette (released in 1985). When Johnny and Omar open a laundrette together, they celebrate by having sex in their office, where they drink champagne, swapping it mouth to mouth.

Maurice (1987), the adaptation of E.M. Forster’s novel of the same name, has the titular character visited by the sexy groundskeeper Alec Scudder, who climbs through Maurice’s window and provides him with his first sexual experience. The sexiness of the two actors and the romantic aspect makes this scene a top contender for best gay love scene.

In a more recent American film, Shelter (2007), a blossoming romance between two surfers is explored. This garnered a sizeable gay fan base due to the erotic allure of man-on-man action in the naturally sexy world of surfing. The scene in the movie where the lovers first get together sizzles with romantic passion.

A number of television shows have been frank in their depiction of gay sex. A sex scene between the gay vampires Eric and Talbot in Alan Ball’s True Blood ups the kinky stakes (no pun intended), since Eric stakes Talbot through the heart immediately after the two have sex. Even if vampires and sadomasochism are not for you, this is one show that has not held back on male nudity and copious sex scenes.

There are numerous other examples of steamy sex scenes in TV shows, from the repressed gay undertaker David’s sudden string of one-night-stands in Six Feet Under to the sometimes graphic (and admittedly twisted) depiction of romance between the characters of Beecher and Keller in the US prison drama Oz. The sheer variety of man-on-man sexual encounters, from workplace shenanigans between laundrette-owners to love between prison thugs, shows that gay sex in film and TV has come a long way towards a greater inclusivity.
