Are Calcium Supplements Safer for Patients with Aortic Valve Stenosis?

According to a study published on merkmanuals.com, calcium supplements are not a great idea for people suffering from aortic valve stenosis. Aortic valve stenosis is the abnormal narrowing of the aortic valves. Calcium supplements can further reduce or block the aortic valves, negatively affecting circulation. As a medical doctor, I agree with the study and suggest aortic valve stenosis patients should avoid calcium supplements at all costs.

How Do Calcium Supplements Affect the Body/Heart Body (Positively or Negatively)?

For people with heart issues, including aortic valve stenosis, calcium supplements calcify the aortic valve, further narrowing or blocking it. This affects blood circulation, increasing the risk of death. Older people without aortic valve stenosis can benefit from calcium supplements. Calcium is involved in forming and maintaining strong, healthy bones, reducing the risk of brittle bones(osteoporosis) and fractures.

What Should People Know About Taking Calcium Supplements as They Get Older And/or If They Have Heart Issues?

Although calcium supplements are taken to help with brittle bones(osteoporosis), they can modify heart issues, including aortic valve stenosis. Therefore, if you are an aortic valve sufferer, it is best to avoid calcium supplements.

Is There Anything Else You’d Like to Add?

Studies show taking supplemental calcium, and Vitamin K reduces the risk of heart-related death. Vitamin K encourages the storage of calcium in bones rather than going to the heart, lowering the severity of heart diseases, including aortic valve stenosis.
