Why, in your opinion, are so many people hesitant to receive mental health treatment?
I think most victims fear judgment from the society, which majorly views mental health conditions as a weakness. Others are proud and imagine they can easily sort their issue without help from another person or specialist.
What are the hardest things your clients struggle with when they start the therapy process?
Most clients have a problem opening up to their specialist. They hold back due to the feeling of incapability and insecurity about their worthiness. Also, they struggle with the thought of being disloyal to friends and family.
Are there common things you tell them?
I always start by feeling sorry for what they are going through. I tell them that I have dealt with many other related cases. Then, I encourage them to know that they are not alone in it.
What have you done as a clinician to help people feel safe and supported when they start therapy?
I ensure that my client feels welcome by watching my body language and tone when talking with them. I never let emotions overwhelm me when a client fails to corporate. Also, I ensure they do not feel rejected since I understand they are vulnerable and need help. I cannot shut down their ideas or dismiss their values.
If you prescribe medication, how do you address patients who are hesitant about starting mental health medication?
I reason with a client making them realize the significance of taking medication. I help them visualize the outcome of success, such as returning to a normal life, going back to work, and spending quality time with loved ones. I also get in contact with friends or family who can give support by reminding them when it is time for medication and its importance.
