When it comes to having a stellar and reputable business, Glynis Albright’s name is synonymous with innovation and success. It all started during her childhood when she developed a love for cooking and baking. She would happily prepare food for her neighbors, friends, and family and always received incredible feedback. Fast forward to present day, Albright has created a globally recognized brand with products that are used in homes, restaurants, cruise ships, hotels, and resorts. She has been seen on TV programs, featured in numerous magazines and has a large and loyal following on social media. Throughout the years, she has perfected the balance between being conscious of people and their health, as well as giving them the familiar and cozy feeling that comfort food brings to their hearts. 

Albright understands that her products offer variety, and variety is what people are looking for. She makes products that are easily accessible, shipped worldwide and packaged with love and care. All products have gone through a series of rigorous checks and balances to ensure that the quality of what you’re getting is top-notch. Her slogan, “It’s not just chicken and waffles, it’s an experience” is certainly true. Her products bring her kitchen right into yours. 

Recent studies show that over 82% of the meals people eat in America are prepared in the home. Although Albright has a global brand with people from a variety of countries and cultures using her products, it’s important to understand the impact of these statistics. The pandemic has caused many people to pay more attention to their health and nutrition. Instead of going out to eat more, many are opting to explore their creativity in their own kitchens. This is a great thing as people are taking more control of what they feed themselves and their families. 

In this interview, Albright delves into the business side of things and opens up about the challenges and opportunities facing the industry. 

     About the Business

Glynis’ Products is a new gourmet food line which consists of delicious mixes for professional and home chefs as well as anyone who loves to cook but doesn’t have the time to be in the kitchen all day.  To date, Glynis’ Products has 7 menu items.  6 are currently available for retail sale:  Glynis’ Waffle Mix, Glynis’ All Purpose Coating Mix, Glynis’ GLUTEN FREE Waffle Mix, Glynis’ Secret Sauce Mix, Glynis’ Scratch Mix and Glynis’ Butter Biscuit Mix.  Glynis’ Caramel Spice Syrup is forthcoming! 

Lastly, The Waffle Queen Coloring Book, aprons and other kitchen merchandise have also been added to the Glynis’ Products line.  

     Founder’s story and what motivated them to start the business 

When I became ill back in the early ‘90’s, my diet and lifestyle had to change.  I was practically bed-ridden but didn’t want to be.  During my visits to the hospitals for various therapies, I met other men and women who were suffering like me.  I’m a talker.  Through conversations with strangers, I decided to start a food line that would assist with my healing process.  That business was called Just Sweet Enough®.  

As I got stronger and stronger, I decided to try offering these treats to others who were health challenged as well as those people who were health conscious and wanted to guard their bodies against dis-ease.  I found out that people were willing to pay me to do it for them.  I opened two locations in Simi Valley, California.

That just wasn’t enough.  I wanted to do more.  I began to create treats for people with other challenges besides cancer.  To date, I have created 5 other gourmet food lines.  They are all in the “comfort food” area because usually, comfort foods are the first to be taken off the list of things to stay away from when facing a health challenge.  Fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices became the root of everything that I create with the bonus of not using artificial sweeteners, additives, preservatives, and food dyes.  

In 2017, Glynis’ Products was born out of people having a demand for good-tasting, light waffles with crispy, flavorful fried chicken.  The recipes were created during the 70’s while attending college.  Through the years, it became a ritual to have Glynis’ Chicken and Waffles whenever you visited my home.  

     The challenges the market is facing.

After speaking to a lot of my colleagues who are in the food industry, I have found that there are many challenges that we are facing.  It’s really across the board in every industry.  There are a few common denominators that hit hard.  I would say the top on the list is shortage of staff.  

Perhaps due to the pandemic, most businesses were unable to survive.  They perished in 2020.  Even when they tried to come back in 2021, most were still able to completely bounce back.  If they did, it was under the circumstance of working with only a handful of loyal employees. 

     The opportunities the industry is facing.

One huge opportunity is social media.  Using our fingertips, social media has made it a bit easier for us to get the word out about our businesses.  It wasn’t so easy in the past.  We now can either advertise on our own or hire someone who is more computer savvy to assist. You have the choice of getting the word out locally or globally contingent upon how far you’d like your database to extend.  It’s exciting!

     Advice to other about business.  

Although this is a very broad statement, I can cover so many topics.  From putting together a business plan, trying to get financing, coming up with a name for your business, protecting your business, how to brand your business, creating a logo, staffing/hiring, figuring out the demographics of your clients, hours of operation, storefront, or online business, just to name a few — let’s just say, to keep it simple, whatever you do, do your best.  No half-stepping.  Give it your all.  Be honest and keep your integrity at its highest level.  Compete only with yourself to do better and better, each year that you’re in business.  Learn from your mistakes so that you don’t repeat them.  Lastly, have fun with it.  There is nothing greater in business than waking up to do something that you are passionate about and being paid for it!
