Food Triggers

Food Triggers for Arthritis Inflammation

Gluten

Gluten initiates the release of the protein zonulin. This protein causes intestinal permeability, whose consequences include immune complexes and systematic inflammation. The former spread quickly to the synovial membrane, depositing in the joint spaces, ligaments, tendons, and cartilage. That being said, you may want to follow a gluten-free diet, whether or not you have celiac disease. Foods to eliminate from your diet include wheat, rye, and barley.

Sugar

Taking too much sugar causes an imbalance in your pH, making your body extremely acidic. This results in overly stressed organs, compromised immune system, and inflamed joints. As an arthritis expert, I strongly advise that you moderate your consumption. This involves taking soft drinks, pastries, and candy in reasonable amounts.

Aspartame

Aspartame is an artificial ingredient common in processed foods, spice mixes, and condiments. Since the body cannot process this ingredient, it is more likely to trigger an immune response, causing inflammation. Substitute convenience products including diet sodas and processed foods with anti-inflammatory products including plant-based proteins, fruits, and vegetables.
