HOW OUR PERIODS CHANGE AS WE AGE

As a female endocrinologist, here is how periods change as we age;

Do our monthly periods change throughout our lifetime? Why?

From my experiences, a woman’s monthly periods are bound to in throughout their lifetime. The changes can be longer or shorter menstruation cycles or differences in receiving and ending the monthly period. This natural process is linked to the change in women from perimenopause to menopause. Hormonal changes due to aging can impact estrogen hormones triggering alterations in your menstrual cycle.

Do they get heavier as we age? Why/why not? When might we expect the heaviest periods to be?

Most women tend to experience heavy periods as they age. The heavy periods arise due to the weakening of the pelvic floor muscles and glands, impacting how they squeeze and contact the endometrium lining. Swelling of the glands and decreased estrogen levels can contribute to heavy periods. Women, expect the heaviest periods in your late 30s to 40s before menopause.

Is a change in our flow/blood loss something to be concerned about?

Simply, changes in blood flow do not indicate any serious health issues as it’s considered a normal scenario to have lighter and shorter periods at times.

What is a ‘normal’ period?

There is no specific duration for what is considered a normal period. Your period is normal if the menstrual cycle happens after every 21 to 35 days and tends to flow for 2 to 7 days. It can be regular, irregular, heavy, light, painless, or painful.

What can we do to support our bodies when our periods are heaviest?

I recommend you drink more water to aid in blood regulation, eat foods high in iron or vitamin C, try using menstrual cups or heating pads, and take medications such as hormonal IUD, NSAIDs, or tranexamic acid.
