WHY DO WE CRAVE CHOCOLATE AROUND OUR PERIOD

There are several hormonal changes that take place in a woman’s body when on their periods which are linked to the higher desire for chocolate. Menstruation comes with hormonal imbalances where the happy hormones such as serotonin decrease causing an increase in the cortisol hormones, this makes women opt for sugary foods or snacks like chocolate as they try to rapidly increase their joyous moods or comfort themselves. A decrease in serotonin hormones spikes insulin levels which forces women to have a chocolate bite in efforts to improve their blood sugar levels and insulin resistance.

With the low production of female hormones like oestrogen when on your periods, women are likely to experience abnormal insulin resistance which results to a drop in blood sugar triggering a demand for high carb food cravings explaining the high urge for chocolate.

Using the acquired academic and professional experience, I advise patients with various complaints about mental health - depressed mood, nervousness, lack of energy and interest, sleep disorders, panic attacks, obsessive thoughts and anxieties, difficulty concentrating, and stress. In my free time, I love to paint and go on long walks on the beach. One of my latest obsessions is sudoku – a wonderful activity to calm an unease mind.
