LGBTQ PRIDE

LGBTQ PRIDE

(1) What are some of the mental health challenges or risks facing members of LGBTQ+ communities in the USA?

Traumatic conditions

LGBTQ community individuals are likely to be bullied, harassed, and discriminated. Even teens in schools possibly undergo verbal harassment and physical assault due to their sexual orientation. This can result in post-traumatic stress disorder.

Depression

A study on LGBTQ mental disorder revealed that 28% of youths in this group reported depression feeling in the past one month and transgender people have a higher depression risk, four times more. The condition is risky and increases suicidal risk.

(2) Are there any potential mental health benefits of celebrating Pride or taking part in Pride events? What tips do you have to help members of LGBTQ communities make the most of Pride?

Pride events boost self-acceptance ad self-confidence because they enhance gender identities normalization, helping individuals believe in themselves and have comfort in their skin. It also helps them have self-expression with increased creativity as they come out with varied accessories ad outfits. They have developed creativity that helps counter structural barriers that hinder self-expression about their sexual orientation.

I recommend the following tips

  • Ensure to attend the LGBTQ parade on that date.
  • Attend an LGBTQ workshop or watch their themed-movie to support this culture.
  • Become an LGBTQ advocate in your company by creating a Pride Employee Network.

(3) If someone can’t openly celebrate Pride or attend Pride events, are there other ways they can connect with LGBTQ+ communities or mark Pride? What tips would you have for people who are feeling isolated or poorly supported during this time?

Of course, yes. If you feel isolated, do the following;

  • You can attend a virtual LGBTQ event that feature activities, such as dance classes, movie night, or interviews.
  • Donate as much as you can, for example, by asking for support from your company or family and friends for a larger portion.
  • Support LGBTQ artists and creators by promoting their work.

(4) How can cis and straight community members support LGBTQ+ communities during Pride?

  • By avoiding the frontline if you are attending their event to offer them a physical space for celebrating their day.
  • Be gracious by avoiding the thought that these folks will get attracted to you. Do not also think of ‘hunting’ someone to help exploit your fantasies.
  • Use your pronoun for introduction to show you are an ally who honors gender identities.

(5) Is there anything else you’d like to tell me about mental health and/or Pride? `

LGBTQ pride events are meaningful to fight against discrimination and violence. If you are part of this group but fear coming out, it is best to speak to someone you believe can help you feel proud about who you are. Attending pride events may also help you feel accepted and worth.
