Calcium
Calcium supplements can promote stronger muscles, bones or teeth. However, recent studies show that taking calcium supplements regularly for longer periods increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases. The calcium from supplements is not absorbed fully in the body, which can trigger deposition in the heart arteries resulting to atherosclerosis characterized by hard and narrow blood vessels. Calcium from healthy foods is a healthier alternative with zero risk of atherosclerosis.
Vitamin D
One of the most common supplements in the UK. The body synthesizes its natural vitamin D when you are exposed to the sun. Not all people get the recommended vitamin D from the sun daily. Taking vitamin D supplements can provide the needed RDI but comes with potential health risks. Consuming excess vitamin D increases calcium absorption which heightens the risks of mood problems, kidney stones, heart attacks, stomach pain, muscle aches, or stroke.
