Well, I think patients should avoid the assumption doctors will question about matters sexuality. It may be best to bring up the conversation.
– Why do you suspect men are asked about sexual side effects so much more frequently than female patients
It could be due to high possibility of men suffering more from the side effects than women. The genitals have high chances of getting affected by cancer, including prostate cancer, testicular, and bladder cancers.
– How can cancer treatments impact sexual health; what are some of the sexual side effects (in women and also in men)
General side effects
- Sexual desire
- General sexuality
- Sexual function
- Effect on sex organs making it hard to perform sex.
Women
- Hormonal imbalance
- Painful sex
Men
- Premature ejaculation
- Dry orgasm probably because semen flows backwards.
- Erectile dysfunction
– How do you hope these findings will be used to improve how patients receiving cancer treatments are counseled?
It may help patients understand what they might be going through in sexual matters during cancer treatment. Patients may also prepare with the right questions during hospital visits for more enlightenment and help of how to deal with the side effects.
