THE MENTAL WELL-BEING BENEFITS OF WALKING

From my experiences, walking can have several benefits to your mental health, including;

Can aid in brain relaxation and improve focus- Walking, especially outdoors or in green spaces, can help clear negative thoughts in the brain, allow you to decompress, and increase your focus on the present as you concentrate on what’s around you. This counts as an effective strategy for helping the brain calm, lower negative distractions and increase our focus on what’s happening around us.

Walking counts as a form of exercise that can induce the release of happy hormones such as endorphins which help elevate mood and improve blood circulation in the brain. Increased blood flow to the brain can positively impact the nervous system by lowering stress hormones as the brain neurons and nerves calm.

Walking increases energy by promoting blood flow in the brain muscles which can help improve one’s sleep patterns.

To easily benefit from walking to boost your mental health, I suggest you find a walking partner to increase social interactions and boost mood while lowering mental disorders such as depression and stress. Taking your dog for a walk or having an effective walking schedule and realistic goals on the distance to cover your walk daily can also help heighten the mental gains.

Using the acquired academic and professional experience, I advise patients with various complaints about mental health - depressed mood, nervousness, lack of energy and interest, sleep disorders, panic attacks, obsessive thoughts and anxieties, difficulty concentrating, and stress. In my free time, I love to paint and go on long walks on the beach. One of my latest obsessions is sudoku – a wonderful activity to calm an unease mind.
