ORANGE JUICE AND DIABETES

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ORANGE JUICE AND DIABETES

Orange juice is valuable in vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals.  However, it has a high glycemic index- a factor determining how fast blood sugar rises after eating. It is unfavorable for people with diabetes because it causes a faster rise in blood sugar levels. I usually advise my clients to opt for whole fruit oranges, instead of its juice to avoid the risk. The juice also lacks fiber, which helps maintain blood sugar levels. Your sugar levels may also worsen if you consume fruit juice accompanied by other carbohydrase that potentially increase the effect. But you can use fruit juice if experiencing hypoglycemia.

Please also provide advice on how people can enjoy orange juice healthily.

As mentioned earlier, I recommend eating the orange fruit rather than blending its juice to reap all the gains. If you must drink the juice, please moderate your intake to avoid excessive sugar consumption, especially for people with diabetes.
