WHAT ARE SEBACEOUS FILAMENTS?

Sebaceous filaments are tiny glands beneath the skin that allow sebum flow to the surface. Sebum overproduction can fill up these filaments, hence appearing like enlarged pores. They are not an acne type, but excessive sebum can lead to blackheads formation- an acne form.

Differences between sebaceous filaments and blackheads

Structure

Blackheads are plugs or blockages preventing oil from getting outside through the skin’s pores. Conversely, sebaceous filaments lack plugs. They are tiny hair-like structures aligned in the pores to allow sebum flow to the surface.

Color and physic

Blackheads are dark due to oxidation and appear on the pores’ top. But sebaceous filaments are dark with small dots looking like pins, can be gray, clear, or yellow.

Treatment

Some individuals may choose to squeeze sebaceous filaments, not knowing it can cause scarring and skin damage. Regulating how much oil you apply to the skin can control them. Exploiting products can also reduce their appearance. Furthermore, regular use of sun protection, helps lower the adverse effects of sun exposure. Oil-free sunscreen can also reduce clogging in pores.

Prevention

•             Regular face washing; morning, evening, and after working out.

•             Shun alcohol or oil-based cleansers.

•             Frequent moisturization for skin hydration.

•             Change your skincare regime; use oil-free moisturizers and make-up to avoid clogging.

•             Avoid face scrubbing- causes irritation.

I am deeply convinced that each patient needs a unique, individual approach. Therefore, I use different psychotherapy methods in my work. During my studies, I discovered an in-depth interest in people as a whole and the belief in the inseparability of mind and body, and the importance of emotional health in physical health. In my spare time, I enjoy reading (a big fan of thrillers) and going on hikes.
