EXERCISE

WHAT’S THE BEST EXERCISE FOR OSTEOARTHRITIS PATIENTS?

What’s the best exercise for people with osteoarthritis? For example, is it light weight training? Aerobics? Walking? Why is the chosen exercise the best and what exercises should people with osteoarthritis avoid, and why?

Aerobics, including swimming, cycling, and walking. For instance, swimming and other water practices create resistance that promotes strength building and flexibility. Water also provides buoyancy, reducing pressure on joints as it exercises them gently. On the other hand, walking and cycling increases stamina and range of motion without stress on the knees and joints. You can begin with 10 minutes and work your way up later, aiming to 30 minutes of exercise at least thrice every week. Otherwise, I also recommend combining with lightweight training, such as, using your body weight. For example, yoga, sitting and standing on a chair, and wall squats to help strengthen the muscles around your joints. But I discourage high impact activities, including step aerobics, sports that involve abrupt change in direction like tennis or netball, and running.

The work of a family doctor includes a wide range of clinical diversity, which requires extensive knowledge and erudition from a specialist. However, I believe that the most important thing for a family doctor is to be human because the cooperation and understanding between the doctor and the patient are crucial in ensuring successful health care. On my days off, I love being in nature. Since childhood, I have been passionate about playing chess and tennis. Whenever I have time off, I enjoy traveling around the world.
