From my career experiences, ruminating tends to be high when faced with stress, depression, or exhaustion. The negative thoughts or beliefs crossing your mind make it hard to shut off the brain or get some good night’s sleep. Normally, this is triggered by fear, disgust, distressing thoughts, anger, sadness, and negative perceptions about something. These core emotions or feelings make the brain resort to conscious help in the ruminating or intrusive thoughts instead of connecting with the body’s actions to develop a solution. This habit traps anxiety energy in the brain, which leads to avoidance of the core emotions and sensations. Shutting down the brain can also be challenging as we try to seek comfortable sensations or feelings by focusing on intrusive or ruminating thoughts rather than calming the brain and facing the physical sensations.
