As humans we love to label things, it’s a psychological response and a way for us to control the environment around us. We love to control things and by having mental labels on everything it allows us to compartmentalise our lives and the people in it. We like to put people into boxes whether that be our friendship box, relationship box or our gay friend box.
Labelling our sexuality has become an increasingly popular thing to do over the last 5 years or so and whilst labelling yourself as one particular sexual orientation is fine it does create limitations for you. Some people have even started to feel pressured to act in accordance with ‘their label’. They may not feel gay enough to fit in with the other gay people or they may over emphasise the fact that they’re heterosexual to avoid any confusion.
Not labelling your sexuality is a liberating experience. It allows a person to just be rather than feel pressured to be something that society expects them to be.
