Is The Phrase “Fat Talk” Appropriate?

As a fat positivity advocate, I find fat talk inappropriate because it encourages body dissatisfaction that increases the risk of disordered eating.

Common Phrases or Comments That Are Anti-Fat and Shouldn’t Be Said

“I Can’t Believe You Are Wearing That”

Plus-sized fashion rules have been around for decades. However, in this day and age, fat folks are devoted to breaking these rules by rocking in clothing traditionally thought to be for thin people, including short skirts and bodycon dresses. Because it is not cool when you say something that fat-shame them, say, “Your outfit is cute.”

“I am Attracted to Your Face”

While this statement sounds positive, any fat positivity advocate will tell you it is used to mock, judge, and shame plus-sized folks. It is like, “You’d be so hot if you hit the gym.” If you must praise someone’s appearance, talk about their whole body.
