LACTIC ACID

LACTIC ACID THRESHOLD

Describe lactic acid threshold and how it is relevant to runners.

First, understand that lactic acid or lactate is produced and released in equal amounts during steady-state exercise and rest. It is when the muscles, liver, and heart get fueled by lactate, especially during moderate exercise intensity at a steady state. However, with high exercise intensity, lactate production overwhelms its absorption, leading to excessive accumulation in the bloodstream- it is the point called lactate threshold. It gives advantage to runners because a higher lactic acid threshold keeps them running at a high intensity for extended periods without quickly getting tired.
