POST-PANDEMIC HEALTH ANXIETY

POST-PANDEMIC HEALTH ANXIETY

Why/how the pandemic has exacerbated health anxiety

Health anxiety increased due to overwhelming information from numerous sources, both reliable and unreliable. People were uncertain about the future and how the virus would go, especially those without prior experience.

Common symptoms/behaviors

  • Muscle ache
  • Coughing
  • Fatigue
  • Sore throat
  • Breath shortness

Good coping methods and ways to rationalize our thoughts

Professional help

Seeking help from a professional can offer guidelines on the best action for anxiety. It may be a therapist or a doctor that will recommend drugs to ease your symptoms.

Only follow information from trusted sources

Search for news and information from honest sources and avoid unregulated ones, including social media. Seeking help from self-diagnosis tools following your symptoms may also increase anxiety. But avoiding such or taking a break if news trigger you can help stay calmer.

What we now know about the virus

The virus spreads when an infected person coughs or sneezes droplets into the air. It emerged in December 2019, and said to originate from bats, birds, and pigs. It led to numerous deaths and extreme symptoms to survivors. The virus has an incubation period of between 2 and 14 days after exposure. Its symptoms include shortness of breath, appetite loss, headache, nausea, sore throat, and fever.

Why social behaviors/restrictions have been able to change as a result

I think they changed because most individuals understood what the virus entails and self-care tips to prevent its spread. People wanted to protect their loved ones and friends from the dreaded illness. Furthermore, they thirsted for a return to normalcy.
