THE 10,000 DAILY STEPS RECOMMENDATION

– where did it come from? Is it a helpful target to aim for?

The 10,000 daily steps recommendation source was the new step tracker- pedometer, byYamasa Clock Company in Japan. This tool was termed ‘Manpo-kei,’ meaning 10,000 steps meter. The company used it to run a campaign of the Tokyo Olympics in 1964, and now a different thing came out of it- the world adopted it as a health recommendation. Even famous smartwatches have it as a daily target, including Fitbit.

The 10,000 daily steps target is meaningful in decreasing death risks. It boosts your health by lowering the risk of chronic sicknesses, including some cancers and dementia. Walking for such a distance helps enhance type 2 diabetes and strengthen the immunity. However, recent research suggests that you can still reap such health benefits by walking half the steps, 5,000. I recommend meeting friends for a nature walk rather than coffee or walk to work if possible.
