THE FIVE YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF #METOO

Are things better for women now?

In my opinion, it is a yes because the movement has changed many women’s lives by a big margin so far. It has worked towards bringing a stop to sexual violence, and making survivors of this act understand that someone is standing by their sides. Also, it has educated people about sexual violence and its implications in the society, leading to more awareness, thus reducing cases of sexual violence.

Have power balances – especially in the workplace – evened out?

The movement has helped most Americans to have a different perception about power. It was mainly confirmed through how Americans responded following the hearing of Justice Brett Kavanaugh with accusations of sexual assault. Furthermore, it helped strip power from HRs with sexual assault cases, and worked towards inclusive leadership practices that can bring out various talents. Asa result, most men feel scared working with women, making them stick to their duties without possible related misconduct.

What, if anything, still need to change?

Yes, the movement has shown effort in making life better for various groups, but there is a gap in cultural and interpersonal requirements. More emphasis now go to individual practices, including coming forward to report matters related to sexual harassment.  People should also intervene for others, in terms of making yourself part of a neighbor’s problem. Be helpful in helping others come out of unethical practices.
