Chronic Illnesses

What Are the Benefits of Self-Care for People with Chronic Illnesses?

To answer this question, we will look at forms of self-care and how they help people with chronic illnesses.

Eating Healthy

As a credentialed nutritionist, I always advise my clients with chronic illnesses to follow a nutrient-rich diet (think: a whole food vegan diet, Mediterranean style diet, or DASH). These diets provide healthful nutrients that reduce the risk of chronic illnesses and strengthen the immune system.

Get Enough Sleep

7 to 9 hours of sleep per day are enough to keep your health in shape. However, if you have a chronic disease, you might need more hours to allow your body to recover from the impacts of the condition.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking enough water throughout the day is said to combat chronic inflammation. This can help prevent and manage chronic illnesses.

 Reach Out

Chronic illness can cause your connection to fade, encouraging loneliness. For this reason, staying connected to your friends, family or neighbors prevents loneliness and can help you cope with your chronic illness.
