Moisturizers Matter

Why Does the Order You Put on Sunscreen Vs Other Products Like Moisturizers Matter?

The order you put on sunscreen determines its efficiency. When you fail to observe the order, the sunscreen is less likely to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

Is It Different for Chemical Vs. Mineral Sunscreen?

Chemical sunscreen is always applied before other products like moisturizers to prevent dryness and shield the skin from dangerous UV rays. On the other hand, mineral or physical sunscreen is applied after moisturizers to ensure the UV rays do not penetrate and damage your skin.

What Should One Look for In Choosing a Sunscreen

SPF Number

As a credentialed dermatologist, I strongly recommend sunscreens with SPF 30 or above. When the SPF number is high, your sunscreen can create a barrier that blocks more UV rays.

Broad-Spectrum Coverage

Before buying sunscreen, check the label to know whether or not it offers broad-spectrum protection. Sunscreen with broad-spectrum protection can shield your skin from both UVA and UVB rays.

Ingredients

Go for sunscreen with zinc oxide avobenzone and titanium oxide. Anything with vitamin A or retinyl palmitate is a no-go zone.

Do You Recommend Mineral or Chemical Sunscreen for The Face?

Both mineral and chemical sunscreen can work for the face unless you have sensitive skin. Chemical sunscreen is not ideal for sensitive skin.

How To Choose Sunscreen for Sensitive, Oily, or Acne-Prone Skin

  • Check for ingredients like oxybenzone and PABA on the label. These two are not great for sensitive skin.
  • If your skin is extremely oily, sunscreen lotions and creams are the best way to go
  • Look for “oil-free and noncomedogenic” on the label. In layman’s terms, sunscreen is less likely to block your pores and cause acne.

How Often to Reapply Sunscreen?

I strongly suggest reapplying sunscreen every 2 hours. However, if you swim or engage in activities that will make you sweat, you may want to reapply your sunscreen every 1 hour.
