Can Burping Be a Sign of a Serious Condition?

Burping Accompanied by Nausea, Appetite Loss and Indigestion

If burping crops up with nausea, appetite loss or indigestion, you might have gastritis. Gastritis can make you more susceptible to ulcers and stomach cancer. Burping with nausea, loss of appetite or indigestion (or both) can also mean you have an infection or stomach flu.

Burping with Bloating, constipation or Abdominal Pain

Experiencing burping with bloating, constipation, or abdominal pain (or a combination of both) is a bad sign. It can signal you have a bowel obstruction or even irritable bowel syndrome(IBS).

Burping with Weight Loss

If rapid loss of weight occurs alongside burping, you may have a bowel obstruction. On the other hand, if slow weight loss accompanies burping, you might have IBS, Crohn’s Disease or even stomach cancer.

Nutritionist, Cornell University, MS

I believe that nutrition science is a wonderful helper both for the preventive improvement of health and adjunctive therapy in treatment. My goal is to help people improve their health and well-being without torturing themselves with unnecessary dietary restrictions. I am a supporter of a healthy lifestyle – I play sports, cycle, and swim in the lake all year round. With my work, I have been featured in Vice, Country Living, Harrods magazine, Daily Telegraph, Grazia, Women's Health, and other media outlets.
