MENTAL HEALTH BENEFITS OF MORNING SUNLIGHT EXPOSURE

The benefits of getting sunlight exposure early in the morning

Boosts vitamin D

Basking in the sun for 30 minutes daily can provide the body with sufficient vitamin D. An increase in vitamin D boosts your immune, enhances absorption of calcium and phosphorus minerals which strengthens the bones and lowers the risks of deficiency diseases like rickets. Vitamin D can also lower the risk of chronic illnesses.

Improves the circadian rhythm

Morning sun exposure can better our circadian rhythm as more melatonin hormones are produced in the body to help maintain a regular sleep/wake cycle preventing fatigue or feeling lethargic when you wake up.  A better circadian rhythm is linked to an improved sleep quality as you get to sleep and wake at almost similar times and the body knows when to release more melatonin to enhance sleep.

Why doing it in the morning and natural light are significant? Does this really boost dopamine and reduce depression risk?

Early morning sunlight is less hot implying it won’t cause any sunburn effects on the body. You can easily absorb the sunrays in the body at this time without worrying about the harmful UV rays affecting your skin health. The natural sunlight can significantly trigger production and release of the feel good hormones such as dopamine and serotonin. Increased happy hormones in the brain can elevate your mood, lower depression symptoms eventually improving mental health explaining why people in cold climate places are prone to SAD.
