RAISE OR REDUCE

STROKE – THINGS THAT RAISE OR REDUCE YOUR RISK

Foods with Omega-3 fatty acids

Foods with omega-3 fatty acids, include flaxseed and fish. Research suggests that omega-3 offers polyunsaturated healthy fats that increase the good cholesterol in blood, a factor that reduce risk of stroke. You can have at least two meals of fatty fish- herring and mackerel, every week to reap more benefits.

Moderate alcohol intake

Excessive alcohol consumption can increase blood pressure, which is related to stroke risk. I always tell my clients to avoid going beyond two bottles for men and one for women, every day. If you have never attempted, please stay away from alcohol because the gains are more compared to those that already drink. Again, individuals that drink excessively should work towards reducing the intake or quitting completely to limit the chance of getting a stroke.

Limit red meats and fried foods

I like baking, steaming, and boiling my foods to minimize the chances of consuming excess calories. I also advise patients to cut or reduce intake of fried foods and red meat, which are inked to the risk of cancer. I ask them to instead, eat white meat, including skinless chicken and salmon. Other substitutes include plant-based products, such as, peas, beans, and tofu that lower the risk of stroke and other heart illnesses.
