While separation anxiety is thought to only affect children, that is not the case. As a mental health expert, I discovered it can affect adults too. Separation anxiety in adults stems from separation or the thought of being separated from people who bring joy in our lives (think: children, spouses, partners, or caregivers).
How Do you Have Separation Anxiety?
Separation anxiety in adults can cause;
- Restlessness or nervousness
- Concentration problems after separation from loved ones
- Constant urge to spend time with the loved one away from you
How to Move Around Separation Anxiety
- Identify the source of your anxiety and journal them. This makes it easy to combat negative thoughts when they strike.
- Replace the negative thoughts with positive thoughts. You can achieve this by staying connected to friends or family and going for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
- Do things that distract you. This can be listening to music, watching a movie, or walking.
