How Overconsuming social media Can Deter Weight Loss

Although most of us find it fun, as a personal trainer, I discovered overconsuming social media could take a toll on our fitness goals. Here is the thing; screens of our digital devices (phones, TVs, and computers) emit the blue light. This light suppresses the production of melatonin, a hormone involved in our sleep-wake cycle control. With the sleep-wake cycle disrupted, you are more likely to get less sleep during the night. Being short on shuteye causes an imbalance in your hunger hormones (leptin and ghrelin). This spikes your hunger and reduces your satiety. Before you know it, you will be eating large amounts of food, jeopardizing your weight loss goal.

How to Navigate the Habit

  • Create a sleep routine and stick to it
  • Make your bedroom screen-free
  • Get a blue light blocker installed on your digital device
  • Wear blue light blocking glasses
