DURING SUMMER

PEOPLE WHO COULD BE AT RISK OF VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY DURING SUMMER

Having extremely low vitamin D is risky as it increases proneness to muscle and bone pain, osteomalacia, and rickets. The deficiency is uncommon and may have more risks on the following groups;

  • Individuals with naturally darker skin because their dark pigment limits the skin from absorbing enough UV radiation for synthesizing the vitamin.
  • Individuals staying indoors for longer, maybe housebound or hospitalized, possibly lack vitamin D due to lack of sun exposure.
  • Breastfeeding babies with moms lacking enough vitamin D, meaning they are receiving less amounts.
  • Obese individuals and those whose systems cannot metabolize vitamin D, such as people with fat malabsorption problem or renal disease.
  • Older and frail individuals due to reduced cutaneous synthesis or altered vitamin D dietary intake.
