MAKES US HAPPY

WHY BIRDSONG IS RELAXING/MAKES US HAPPY

Why do we respond so well to birdsong?

Since time immemorial, people associate birdsongs and melodies with safety. It may be worrying if they notice that birds stopped singing. Again, birds are a natural alarm, especially in the morning indicating that the day has started. It heightens one’s spirits, making them ready to face the day. In short, birdsong is naturally reassuring and calming in general.

Is it to do with nostalgia (if we have happy memories of being in nature)? Or back further than that and something more evolutionary (e.g. birdsong suggests thriving wildlife and therefore somewhere that humans could thrive too)?

Of course, yes. The nostalgia is seen in a few TikTok videos of individuals. For instance, someone paired the song to the voice produced when booting up a Dell computer. Other people paired the sound with their childhood’s visual recreations all-inclusive touching experience.
