What are some of the most common reasons people go to relationship therapy?

Sexual problems

I always tell people that sex in a relationship can either build or break a couple. In my counseling sessions, I come across many sexual issues among couples. It is mainly surrounding embarrassment, anxiety, and anger. But through a few counseling sessions, the issues can lessen.

Communication problems

A relationship without communication is near dead. You can communication through different methods, including text, one on one, or call. If it is an issue bothering your relationship, therapy can guide on effective communication, which may be helpful in solving issues affecting the relationship.

Do individuals ever attend relationship therapy alone? Or is it important for both partners to always be involved?

Of course, yes. Some spouses choose to go alone because they have realized it can help their marriages. But both parties may choose counseling when the relationship is extremely strained with possible break up.

If couples decide to do couples therapy online, are there any special considerations they should take?

Consider things like;

  • Getting a referral by a close friend or family, especially if they found it helpful.
  • Doing proper research to find out more about the therapist; qualifications and reviews.

How long do couples stay in couples counseling?

The duration mainly relies of factors, including commitment and the therapy model chosen. But it may require about 8 to 12 sessions of between 45 minutes to 1 hour or more.

What are some important factors to consider when finding the right relationship therapist?

  • Both parties should consider participating in the therapy, but please do not force your partner when they are not willing.
  • Suppose one of you has another challenge like addiction that could be contributing to your relationship issues, they may also require a different therapy to lessen the problem.
  • If you may realize that the issue causing trouble may require separate therapy sessions to find a solution, please consider having different sessions.
