Why Might Someone Wake Up Feeling Bloated or With Indigestion?

Waking up feeling or with indigestion? Yes, it is a common phenomenon. Medically, we call that morning bloating. The condition mostly stems from eating or drinking the following during the day or before bedtime.

  • Carbonated beverages, including soda
  • Sugar
  • Large amounts of salt
  • Artificial sweeteners
  • Too many gas-causing foods, including beans, cabbage, and broccoli
  • Large amounts of fiber
  • Alcohol
  • Too much food

Other Causes of Morning Bloating

  • Menstruation
  • Taking less than 5 glasses of water during the day

What Can You Do to Help This?

As a registered dietician, I highly recommend moderating gas-causing foods consumption. Since we have also learned eating large meals can cause morning bloating, eat smaller foods during the day or before bedtime.

Wait, What About Deep Breathing?

Deep breathing activates the diaphragm, creating a gentle massaging action that mostly works in the intestines and stomach. The gentle massaging action helps with constipation, bloating, urgency, and abdominal pain.

I am deeply convinced that each patient needs a unique, individual approach. Therefore, I use different psychotherapy methods in my work. During my studies, I discovered an in-depth interest in people as a whole and the belief in the inseparability of mind and body, and the importance of emotional health in physical health. In my spare time, I enjoy reading (a big fan of thrillers) and going on hikes.
