SAMPLE BREAKUP TEXTS

1. Please share a scenario in which you might want to break up with someone via text, or where it might be okay to do so. What should you say to them to end the relationship? Please briefly explain why it’s okay to send a text in this situation, plus why the text works.

If the person made you feel uncomfortable or unsafe in any way on your dates then it’s perfectly acceptable to break up with them via text. Your safety is the number one priority and if you think they’re going to react aggressively then ending it by text is the best option. Create a text that is firm but fair. Simply state that you don’t think you’re a good match for each other so you don’t want to take the relationship any further. They may respond and try to convince you otherwise but stay firm. If they made you feel uncomfortable last time you can almost guarantee that your gut is trying to tell you something.

2. Some situations (i.e., you only went on one date, they hurt your feelings, the person was rude to the waiter, etc.) really do call for a swift text breakup. Can you share your thoughts on why it’s sometimes okay to break up with someone via text?
If you’ve only been on one date with someone then it is also considered acceptable to break up via text. Meeting in person to do it can draw out the event unnecessarily. Just make sure you’re honest with them. If you didn’t feel a connection in that way say so. You don’t have to be mean or cruel but make sure they’re in no doubt about how you feel. Trust your gut, if something felt off about the date then that is your subconscious trying to warn you not to take it any further.
